A few weeks ago a group of our friends got together to talk about an awareness campaign on food and packaging waste. We watched the ABC’s program ‘War on Waste’ and were all shocked with the amount of food and packaging waste going into landfill.
Landfill is a result of our habits and behaviours as consumers. Supermarkets with their imperfect, rigid fruit and vegetable sizes and the growing need to package all fruit and vegetables are adding to the problem. High profile Australian packaging companies should take a good look at themselves, they are a big part of the waste problem. Some of these companies masquerade as recyclers, with their avoidance of unnecessary packaging they create for fruit and vegetables.
According to the program, Australian households are throwing away nearly one tonne of food every year, this is adding up to a retail value of $3500. Food wastage has become a major issue in this country, we are all responsible and can make more effort tackle this problem.
